The two national naturist organizations, the British Sun Bathing Association and the Federation of British Sun Clubs, draw your attention to the fact that only the first three words and definitions stated below are recognized and used by them in describing the activities of their member clubs and associated individual members. Your co-operation in ensuring the use of these words and definitions is invited.

NATURISM: A health movement which advocates the judicious outdoor practice of nude sun, air and fresh or salt water bathing, either individually, or socially in private grounds (sun clubs, naturist clubs) or secluded places, in furtherance of physical, moral and mental well-being.

NATURIST: One who practices naturism.

SUN CLUB or NATURIST CLUB: Private grounds, usually wooded and containing recreational amenities, for the practice by all age groups of social naturism. usually member or proprietary managed.

as opposed to:

NUDISM: The cult of going naked whenever possible, usually associated with contempt for clothes and conventions.

NUDIST: One who practices nudism.

A.N.A. – WHAT IS IT?

ANA is the new, controversial American Nudist Association. This Writer was sent to Florida to gather together a report on just who and what is the organization, what are its aims and purposes, its similarities to and differences from the existing nudist organizations.

Nudism, as many other social institutions needs planning and organization for steady growth and progress. Here, then is the need for political operations within the order. There must be an organization. This organization then must have officers and government. To be democratic (which seems to be about the best arrangement we have found for this sort of thing) the officers are elected by vote. This brings in many of the so-called evils of democracy, power groups, behind the scenes deals, trading of favors, even the old “spoils to the victor” idea.

Due to dissatisfaction with existing associations and politics many clubs have either dropped their affiliation with various nudist associations rolls, or just plain haven’t joined any association.

My first stop was the Floritans Society, Inc. of Delray Beach, Florida, center of the American Nudist Association, I talked with several people including John E, Dawson, resident manager of Floritans and one of the fires of the ANA.

Dawson explained that several of these unaffiliated clubs, while visiting among themselves had talked of the type association they would like to have. Somewhere along a vague line back in middle 1962 some of the clubs realized they had a group, and that group shared very similar ideas as to their desires in an “association”.

A meeting of this group netted a set of officers and some working committees. Later came a constitution and bylaws. Future meetings began to work out difficulties and differences between member clubs. Also new clubs began joining the new ASA. Baskets of mail were stacking up as inquiries started coming from all over the country. I saw letters to ANA from three different countries come in with one day’s mail.

I asked Dawson the difference between the American Nudist Association and other existing nudist organizations. He explained that ANA has a more loose and flexible alliance. There is less central authority with ANA. The clubs are allowed more freedom in the handling of their internal problems such as finances and membership.

At this point I asked if this might not encourage the entrance of undesirables in some member clubs who might be more interested in revenue than in the principles of wholesome nudism.

Dawson says that this happens anyway, but that ANA feels that that is the problem of the individual club. No one should tell the club owner that he can have this member in his club and not that one.

The American Nudist Association boasts a membership of the following 14 clubs:
Floritans Society, Sunny Acres Lodge, Tan Tans, Sunny Sands Resort, Coral Lake Health Resort, Ceder Crest Ranch, Laurel Acres, Paradise Acres, Sunnyana, Club Alfa, Caribares, Associates, Sun Valley Gardens, Braden Palms.

The ANA functions through a Board of Directors made up of ANA officers and one member from each club. All basic policy is set down by this Board and theoretically represents the general consensus of opinion of all its member clubs. Since each club can cast only one vote regardless of size, there is no way for one giant among the clubs unduely influence the decisions of the other clubs.

The ANA Board of Directors runs as follows:
President: Hugh C. Lester. Vice Pres.: Richard Deckert. Sec.Treas.: John E. Dawson. Recording Sec.: John Hensey. Editor: Mary Dawson.

In interviews with Tee Latimer, existing president of ASA and Rose Holroyd, Executive Director of ASA, I asked if they felt that ASA carried too much central authority or was being too strict for the general good of nudism. They both emphatically expressed the belief that a parent watchdog is necessary at this point. Nudism as a healthy social practice can advance and be accepted only if we keep it clean and healthy. One rotten apple can easily cause the general public to think that we have a bad brand of fruit, and we need to be able to remove that apple quickly and efficiently once it is detected. Rose Holroyd said, “We want it definitely understood that we of the American Sunbathing Association are in no way associated with ANA or with any of the clubs who are tied to the ANA!”

I talked with Alois Knapp, big gun of NNC and CSA and owner of Zoro Nature Club in Indiana. Knapp who is spending the winter at Tropical Gardens was asked to comment on the report that ANA and NNC were enjoying a steadily improving relationship and were coming to better understanding. Knapp quipped, ‘This is all news to me!”

I returned to Floritans Society to attend the first annual ANA Convention held there February 6 thru 10^th, 1963. Despite bad weather early in the week there was a pretty good turnout (approximately 200 people on the grounds the last day). On the last day John Dawson made the public announcement that this was the first annual ANA convention and that it was probably the last. This was due to the fact that he had talked with Mervin Mounce and Norval Packwood this week, he said, and that ANA would almost certainly merge with the American Health Alliance.

So here you have it. The American Nudist Association born in mid “62” of clubs not affiliated and wanting a loose alliance with less central control. The American Sunbathing Association officially wanting no associations with this new group. Conflicts in reports of NNC’s reaction to the new association, and now John Dawson’s report that ANA is to merge with the American Health Alliance.

LUPIN LODGE LEAVES ASA

Lupin Lodge, near San Francisco, California, which registered 359 members at the 1962 ASA convention, has decided to sever its connection with the American Sunbathing Association. Lupin is the eighth club to leave the association since the last convention. Ethel Plant, director of Lupin, in her letter of resignation to the ASA executive director, invokes the reasons expressed by owners of the seven other, now independent, California clubs and adds one of her own: the multiplicity of new nudist magazines published, not always with the best of editorial judgment, yet approved and stoutly touted by the association.

Dear Rose:

As of this date, we have not received our charter for 1963, and I am writing to ask you not to send it.

When the management of Lupin Lodge became aware of the epidemic of so-called nudist magazines published by people who also publish “girlie” magazines, and displaying pictures that we consider pornographic, we expected that the ASA would take a firm stand, disassociating itself from this type of publication. However, this has not been done. On the contrary, the ASA Seal of Approval is displayed on the front pages of these magazines, and a great deal of effort to sell, promote and defend them is made by the ASA.

This connection put the Association in a very unfavorable condition to defend nudism.

For these reasons, plus those expressed by the owners of the seven Southern California camps that have recently left the ASA, we have decided to sever our affiliation with the organization.

All of which leads us to wonder. Whenever we see so many reasons given for an action, when one good reason would be sufficient, we begin to wonder if any of them is the real reason. We wonder what has happened, suddenly, to a relatively stable organization which would cause it to fall apart. Certainly there has been no great change in organizational policy or ruling documents –except, of course, the new membership and dues procedures, which appear to us to be no great hurdle for a seasoned and qualified leadership. Surely the nudist philosophy has not suddenly become invalid. We cannot believe that the benefits of strong organization, brotherhood and unity of purpose have suddenly ceased to exist.

Was the uneasy piece of 1961-62 a case of the organization being held together by the sheer weight of the personality of the great peacemaker? What has changed since the convention of August 1962? What great fundamental fault is there within the association now, which was not there prior to last August? What fault which would cause eight clubs to depart the ASA? (And is there any reason to believe that the end of the exodus is in sight.) What fault, what unfulfilled NEED, what error has now come to the surface which gives birth to seven would-be national nudist associations in a country where one, or at most two, should suffice? Are there a lot of little symptoms, such as aching joints, chills and fever, sore throat, a cough –or is there one big reason–such a galloping consumption?

LUROS' MAGAZINES QUIT

Citing an overcrowded market, a baffling array of “haphazard quality” nudist-type magazines and a corresponding dip in sales– it has been announced that Utopia, Arcadia, Sol, and Nudistory magazines are being suspended. Ed Lea, purveyor for the Luros interests' only gesture toward putting out genuine nudist publications, threw in the towel early this month. Luros interests include some 27 titles purporting to be nudist and probably an equal number of “girlie” magazines, some of which in recent months have been called “girlies with hair” due to the fact that they display pubic areas, both hirsute and depilated, with great abandon suspicious of deliberate exhibition. Luros currently has a serious obscenity conviction on appeal. Ed Lea and Luros, according to the announcement, were “forced to the conclusion that magazines devoted exclusively to the nudist cause have served their purpose,” after a careful survey “and are now editorially self-limiting.”

The term “self-limiting” is not defined, nor is it explained whose “purpose” is supposed to have been served. There is a plethora of pseudonudist magazines, and beyond a doubt their very superabundance, if nothing else, has made inroads on the market and left many serious readers “uncertain about the genuine article.” However, this does not force the conclusion that there is no longer need–or at least room–for the authentic product. Therefore, the phrase “magazines devoted exclusively to the nudist cause have served their purpose” must be intended to mean that magazines concerned only with nudism per se no longer make money for the California publisher: have served his purpose. As publishers of bona fide nudist magazines we can certainly agree that such magazines are not making money. If profit is a man's only motive then he should leave the field. And by “editorially self-limiting,” are we being told that nudism as practiced by nudists and presented to the public as such is not enough? Not enough for what? Profit calculations in the “girlie” trade? Or is our very way of life deficient in the eyes of a public slavering after visions of a “New Morality” proffered by the likes of Ankhdom?

Also what happens to Nudism Today, the ASA official journal printed and distributed by the same interests? Is it a magazine “devoted exclusively to the nudist cause,” to be abandoned as unprofitable? Or is it to survive by further compromising nudist principles and ideals?

Samples of what apparently does sell and which is being passed off under the guise or at least aegis of nudism, as evidenced by both declaration of purpose and content in several recent Parliament publications, include: “Provocative words and pictures,” “pornography,” “erotic art,” “The Sexual Revolution... current erotic behavior,” “uses and abuse of curiosity,” and even a “swinging Sunshine Safari.” The latter offers “Naked and alive... the players cavort,” “Languorous lunch... where the views of the desert (and each other) inspire some far-out art forms.” This is all before “a female form” is 'put to the test.” (“You pour while she rubs.” A “Far-out Film” (“Naked Freak-out”) rounds out the offering, complete with “three swinging couples” inviting the viewer to “join the revelry.” “AND-for the first time... the illusion of a psychedelic trip.” “Visual thrills” include “Swinging visitors” joining their “trippy hosts” for the “lively antics of a nudist happening.” The above is not nudism. We do not feel nudism is even related to these perversions of our ideals. We assure everyone that rather than accept such possible dictates the bona fide nudist press will retire. As for the failure of Utopia and the efforts of Ed Lea to maintain his ideals within the framework prescribed by his employers –which apparently is what has happened–we are truly sorry. Ed Lea is a photographer par excellent and we would sincerely hope that his considerable talents will be employed to the promotion of the nudist movement alone.

Before nudists shed a tear or a brief pause of respect for the demise of a serious, even if at times misdirected, effort, we ought to make note of the qualifications embodied in Utopia's announcement: particularly a final accounting with contributors tempered by an intention to utilize articles and photographs on hand “in other ventures under consideration.” Perhaps excursions along the lines of the Elysium nakedelic panderings?

“Whatever business I go into,” concludes Lea, “I shall never forget your patience and loyalty.” We suggest if he indeed contemplates throwing his talent and editorial nest egg–including submissions from legitimate nudist parks–into free love fodder and its ilk, nudists would do well to more than file for divorce, and consign whatsoever patience and loyalty which does remain to a similar dung heap.

GSSA HOLDS FIRST CONVENTION

McConville, Box 477, Elsinore, California. Oldest club in the state, opened its beautiful oak shaded grounds and fantastic new 34x62 foot pool to the members of other clubs in the Golden States Sunbathing Association for their first convention. Since this new organization is governed by the camp owners who formed it the members did not have to bother with “politics” so the only semblance of a convention was the “open forum” when members were invited to ask the owners questions about policy and plans. This was termed a “successful flop” when few members came and fewer questions were asked. This was taken as an indication that the members really do not care about such matters and are content to let their decisions be made for them.

Other features of conventions occupied the happy members however, and all are reported to have had an enjoyable time. McConville members put on a barbeque chicken dinner Saturday night and a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. The usual King and Queen contest was replaced by a “Lad and Lass” contest since McConville was following a Scottish theme throughout, in memory of its founder. Genuine imported Scotch costumes in the McConville plaid were given to the winners of the contest, and all who attended were given Scottish coins instead of the usual plastic momento.

An official emblem was designed and a news bulletin named by lucky members who won $25 U.S. Savings bonds for their efforts. The emblem shows the letters GSSA on a sun with spiral rays. The name for the new paper is NUDISTCOVERY. A total of 621 persons from seven GSSA clubs and four ASA “travel clubs” were said to have attended the event.

North Hollywood is one of the publishing capitals of “girlie” and “nudist” magazines, a shocked audience at a meeting on “obscene literature” was told.

Crowded about a lengthy table on which two score of “indecent” magazines collected from North Hollywood newsstands were displayed for critical examination, one indignant woman exclaimed, “I didn't have any idea this was going on.”

Two of the bigger magazines exhibiting women posed in various states of undress were plainly marked as being published in North Hollywood.

Los Angeles Police Department vice officer Louis McClary told the meeting, “Some of the biggest operators in this trash literature in the United States are right here in Southern California.”

He was one of a panel of four experts answering questions at the Walter Reed School meeting called by the “Committee for Decent Literature,” affiliated with the North Hollywood Coordinating Council.

A black and white film, “Pages of Death” was also shown. It depicted in an emotionally hard hitting message how a decent high school boy is poisoned, as surely as if it were dope, by the easily available “indecent” magazine, until he ravishes and murder an innocent 12-year-old girl.

Pierce College sociology Professor Thomas Devine scored materialism, Freud and Kinsey, for overemphasis on sex which paved the way to the present “sorry state.”

The Kinsey report gave a certain license to this sort of thing “when it said 95 per cent of men, and probably as many women, would be in jail if the existing sex laws were enforced,” Devine said.

He concluded, “Freedom of press, the mask behind which these indecent publishers operate, translated into French means hogwash.”

McClary laid a major upswing in local crime against persons, such as murder and criminal attack, at the door of the magazines. Murder increased 3.2 per cent in 1961 over 1960 in the country, and criminal attack came from 1085 to 1156, he said.

This is particularly striking in view of a decrease in other types of crime, McClary said.

Phychiatrist Richard Thomas, M.D., said, “Pornography is the symptom of a sick society. We live in an area where responsibilities of parenthood are denied or given to somebody else.”

“The decline in morals began with women's reaction to new found freedom which began in the early part of the century.”

He scored the replacement of the once dominant father by the now dominant mother in many homes, reversing the parent roles “until kids don't know who to identify with. Many sex problems are caused by this difficulty of identification.”

Dr. Thomas added “parents have abdicated their responsibility to teach sex. So many parents don't accept sexuality in children, so children have to turn to someone who does. Too often it's the newsstand drug store man.”

He took exception with Prof. Devine's comments on Freud, however, defending Freud's “clinical contributions.”

Nor could the psychiatrist go along with a woman member of the audience who thought changing the term “sex” to something else would make it easier for parents to teach their children. “Sex by any other name is still sex.”

Edward George, successful prosecutor of “Tropic of Cancer” fame, flayed the difficulties of the prosecution in obscenity cases because of “loopholes” in existing laws. McClary also participated in the recent trial which ended in the conviction of a bookseller. Prof. Devine was also one of 19 expert witnesses for the prosecution in the trial.

The Rev. George Wall, pastor of the First Baptist Church of North Hollywood, concluded the meeting by urging the audience to take individual action “to stamp out the menace. A basic first step is education of the public to the menace. Write, write letters of complaint to police, and to legislators urging adequate laws. Tell your neighbors.”

President of the North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Jack Elliott promised forthcoming action by that organization.

The Luros organization in general and Sun Era in particular continue to be a popular target for critics. There are times when I earnestly wish that those who shout would make an effort to find out exactly what sort of a setup Luros has. I am not on his payroll in any way and have no desire to be, but in the interest of enlightened thinking I wish that folks would judge the Sun Era publications on their worth alone. I can hear the cry that some of his magazines contain pics of girls in what may be regarded as suggestive and inviting poses, but this same evaluation can be made of any and all nudist publications. The Boone products over the years were attacked at times from within nudism. And our “bona fide nudist” publishers are not averse to using full color center spreads of voluptuous females. There is room for real doubt if we can ever produce a nudist journal which will satisfy everyone. A few years back, Reed Suplee tried it, and his magazine was so tame no one wanted it, not even the nudists.

THERE'S MONEY IN NUDITY

We have published several articles in recent months drawing attention to the unscrupulous manner in which certain film-producers in England have been “cashing in” on nudity to the severe detriment of the movement. That this bad example is now spreading to other countries may be gathered from an article in the West German newspaper “Das Freie Wort” (“The Free World”) published at Bonn. We append a translation of the original printed in issue no. 24 dated the 27th of March 1963:

“It was not the competition offered by television which first made films aware of nudity and as long as it is portrayed on the screen there will be a minor but persistent state of hostilities between the producers and the censors. One fact that cannot be overlooked in this complex is, of course, that screen-nudity does not always reflect artistic intentions on the producer’s part: quite the contrary. More often than not the naked body “reveals” his really massive business interests.

Certain circles have recently turned screen-nudity into a new trade which they are eagerly pursuing. Cinemas in our large cities are screening films which promise “Friends of the Sun” glimpses of paradisial nakedness on naturist “Free Beaches”. Anyone who is not thoroughly scared off by the advertising-posters is certainly cured of all further desire to see “nudist films” after two hours of it in the cramped confines of a cinema-seat.

The reason is not far to seek: all these productions have certain features in common:
a) The colour is absolutely fifth-rate.
b) The plot (if we can use the word in this connection) is idiotic.
c) The nudity is strictly rationed: to comply with the censors’ demands only naked bottoms, side views or frontal pictures of the female breast may be shown.

The latest nudism film is about that now famous “Free beach” called Abyssinia on the Baltic island of Sylt. The feature is short enough, in all conscience, but even at that, nine-tenths has nothing whatever to do with the “Free Beach”. And the rest of the programme is taken up by prize specimens from the cultural “junk shop”.

The wonder is that our “voluntary censorship” releases such films at all, because by doing so they become jointly guilty of deceiving the public at large in ruthlessly cutting cinematic windbags and then allowing public exhibition of the over-exposed remains. Our voluntary censorship should not decide to release films whose lack of taste and inanity exceed certain limits.

Indeed, our Federal German “Morals” in puncto “film-nakedness” are really highly questionable. One can see this by comparing the “nudist films” exhibited publicly in commercial cinemas and the official films of the German FKK (naturist movement) shown publicly in local halls or university lecture-rooms. Anyone who wishes may go to see the latter and announcements about them appear regularly in the press and on the bill-boards.

These naturist films show human beings jumping around entirely naked and indulging their high spirits in the sunshine “warts and all”. No parts of the body are taboo here: nothing has fallen foul of a pedantic censor or his moral scissors. The colours are uniformly excellent and the plots, if slight, are not idiotic. A double moral standard is, obviously, being applied. The truncated and approved films released by the Voluntary Censorship have an embarrassing and ludicrous effect, while the official naturist films showing complete are not only natural but even elevating. There is nothing in the world offensive about nudity seen against proper backgrounds that is in the bounds of nature. This also applies to nakedness in films produced against such a background. But nudity does definitely become offensive when inane films are made and then butchered by the censor’s outstretched scissors. The Federal German Censorship Authorities should put on their thinking caps about this and other manifestations of false morality. They should ponder the fact their “Voluntary Film Controllers” have been swallowing the “double think”, hook, line and sinker. They might also with profit ponder on the “war”, “sweet life”, and “crime” films with which we are being deluged.

One gets the impression nowadays that the German cinema considers morality to be less an affair of avoiding things calculated to arouse base passions (especially in the young) than a mere question of how many inches of uncovered human flesh may be exhibited on the screen”.

NUDISM NEEDS TO “COME OUT OF THE WOODS”

We hear and read frequently made statements that “nudism has come out of the woods,” but has it? Such statements were particularly prevalent a few years back when the ASA Executive Offices were moved from the grounds of Pine Forest to their present location in Mays Landing. To the extent of this move, the statements were true. We find, however, that they have been made with increasing frequency to nudism generally and to clubs in particular.

It is our feeling that in these latter instances such statements are not generally true. There are still far too many clubs in which even the thinking behind the effort needs to “come out of the woods” before the clubs, themselves, can have any hope of getting out of the woods and away from the all too rustic setting and accommodations offered to the members and potential members. All too often the word “rustic” is being used as a crutch upon which to lean in a defense of what is plainly inadequate facilities.

Nudism has reached the place in its progress toward acceptance when many people are being attracted to it who have no desire to be required to become pioneers at the same time. They have every right to feel that after some thirty years on the American scene, nudism should have something more to offer than a camping area and outdoor sanitary facilities. Yet there is a surprisingly large number of nudist clubs, and we use the words loosely, which offer little more.

Eastern clubs, as well as other clubs attracting members from the larger cities, are in particular need to modernize, to offer these new people to nudism something more than primitive accommodations. It is necessary they be offered something in the line of more modern accommodations and facilities. None of them are asking for a deluxe set-up or a Waldorf type of accommodations and services. They do ask for the type of accommodations and facilities they might find at any small non-nudist vacation resort. They have every right to expect such facilities, and, in the main, are perfectly willing to pay for them. They are not willing to pay for them and not receive them.

It is time that operators of nudist parks and resorts began to show a degree of progress at least equal to the degree of acceptance nudism has gained. Less attention should be given to internal politics by nudist officials, regardless of organization, and more given to the assurance of further progress of the nudist movement. Nudism cannot be said to have actually come out of the woods until nudist thinking can be said to have first done so. It is time that we stopped kidding ourselves and gave some real thought to the common problems at hand. Until this is done, nudism's rate of progress will continue to be considerably less than that which is desired.

A PORTRAIT OF A GREAT NUDIST

The question has often been put to me, "Why do you work so hard at nudism?" "What do you get out of it?" I believe that I can best answer these questions by telling you about a man whom I recently met at Sunny Palms in Florida.

He was a big man. His alert and piercing eyes sparkled with excitement. He proudly manifest his love of life and of people. He reminded me of a big, friendly St. Bernard dog. His movements were easy; he was awkward; he was graceful. His deep and booming voice commanded attention. He was not too articulate, but he was capable of expressing his thoughts, the logic of which was excellent. This was not minimized by the fact that he spoke with an accent indicative of his foreign birth.

He held no titles. No honors had been bestowed upon him. He was just another nudist who would be characterized as another ordinary member. However, it did not take long to determine the tremendous impact of his personality and of his activities; his heartfelt love of his fellow-members; his ever willingness to aid nudism or his friends by services or contributions. Everyone knew that he could be counted on to respond in an emergency. His response to a call for help was immediate and unequivocal. His love of and devotion to nudism and nudists was of great depth and quality.

What motivated this remarkable individual? Evaluation did not disclose at any point that he was subjective in his thinking. His sole reason for always being ready and willing to serve, or to undertake anything which he felt would aid the cause, was that he was dedicated to the principles of nudism. He was a zealot who was consumed by a contagious spirit. His presence in a group gave birth to an esprit de corps. All others experienced a pride in being a part of that group. He was the catalyst that blended the many personalities. Little did he realize the importance of his influence upon those with whom he came in contact.

It was on my recent trip to Florida, when I attended the ESA Mid-winter Conference at the Lake Como Club and visited Sunny Palms that I had the great pleasure and stimulating experience of meeting this great nudist. So profound was the impact of this event that I have been thinking how representative he is of many of the members of the ASA. He is characteristic of the many unsung heroes, who, through their untiring, unselfish, and unacknowledged efforts, have made it possible for nudism to attain the maturity it now enjoys. I am certain that many of us know other wonderful members of the Association who are within the category I have described above. In our busy lives, let us give them deserving recognition; let us take a moment to bestow a "sun tan," a word of appreciation and praise upon them when the opportunity presents itself. These are truly important people.

Thus, let me state that I am inspired to render service to the organization by the example of men of this statute and caliber. I am compelled to emulate these great people. A commendable example must be followed. Everyone can become a member of this select group of builders. Join with me and let us seek and earn admission into their midst.
